You need a towing service if the car won't run at all after a jump-start attempt, has been in an accident and any wheel is damaged or leaking fluid, has a seized engine, an overheating warning that won't clear, transmission failure, or is stuck somewhere it can't be driven out of (basement carpark, sand, kerb). If any single fault makes the car unsafe or physically impossible to move on its own wheels, tow it — don't drive.
Clear-cut cases for towing
- After an accident — even a low-speed knock can crack a wheel, punch a hole in the oil pan, or bend a control arm. Driving on a damaged car can cause a much bigger repair bill.
- Engine won't start after a jump-start — battery is fine but something else has failed (starter motor, fuel system, immobilizer). Get it to a workshop.
- Overheating that returns — coolant lost, thermostat stuck, water pump failed. Continuing to drive can warp the head and total the engine.
- Transmission slipping or won't select a gear — driving it further usually kills the gearbox.
- Burning-oil smell or oil light — stop, don't restart, tow. Continued driving destroys the engine within minutes.
- Grinding noise from a wheel — wheel bearing or brake caliper seized; can fail catastrophically at speed.
- Stuck in sand, mud, or an unusual position — professional recovery beats bogging in further.
Grey-area cases where towing might be avoided
If the car started but the battery keeps dying, or you're out of fuel, or you're locked out — these usually don't need a tow. See:
- Signs you need a jump-start (fix on-spot, no tow needed)
- Petrol delivery (fuel delivered to your car)
- Car lockout service (unlock without damaging the car)
- Flat tyre replacement (mobile change, no tow)
Why UAE conditions make some of this urgent
Summer heat above 45 °C can push a marginal cooling system past its limit in 10 minutes. A car pulled over on a hard shoulder in Dubai in July is dangerous — driver and passengers should exit safely and call for a tow rather than sit inside a stationary car with a failing AC.
What to do right now
If any of the clear-cut signs apply, park the car safely if you can, turn on hazards, get everyone out of the vehicle in a safe location off the carriageway, and book a mobile towing service in the QARO app. Average dispatch is under 8 minutes in major cities; longer for desert or off-road recovery.
Cost signal
Towing starts at AED 100 (VAT inclusive) plus distance. Full breakdown: towing cost in the UAE. See also what towing involves.
