How to Jump-Start a Car Safely (Including in UAE Heat)

You need either jumper cables and a second car, or a charged portable jump pack, and about ten minutes. If you are on a busy road, the car has start-stop or a hybrid system, or you would rather not, a QARO technician can do it — starting from AED 120, wherever the car is.

Jumper cable order: red on the dead battery's positive, red on the good battery's positive, black on the good battery's negative, last black on bare metal on the dead car's engine

What you need

  • Jumper cables and a second car with a 12-volt battery, or
  • A portable jump pack (a jump starter), charged
  • Gloves and a torch, and the owner’s manual for where the battery or jump points are

The order of the cables is the part that matters: positive first, and the last black clamp on bare metal, never on the dead battery.

Step by step, with jumper cables

  1. Step 1: Park safely and switch everything off. Park the working car close to the dead one, nose to nose or side by side, without the cars touching. Switch off both engines, lights, AC and radio, put both in P (or neutral) with the handbrake on.
  2. Step 2: Find the battery, or the jump points. Open both bonnets. Some cars keep the battery in the boot or under a seat and give you jump points under the bonnet instead; the owner’s manual shows where. Do not jump a battery that is cracked, leaking or swollen.
  3. Step 3: Red clamp on the dead battery’s positive (+). Clip one red clamp onto the positive terminal of the dead battery, then the other red clamp onto the positive terminal of the good battery.
  4. Step 4: Black clamp on the good battery’s negative (−). Clip one black clamp onto the negative terminal of the good battery. Clip the last black clamp onto bare, unpainted metal on the dead car’s engine, away from the battery, not onto the dead battery itself. That keeps any spark away from battery gas.
  5. Step 5: Start the working car, then the dead one. Start the working car and let it run for two or three minutes. Then try the dead car. If it does not start after a few seconds of cranking, wait a minute and try again; after two or three tries, stop.
  6. Step 6: Remove the cables in reverse order. Black clamp off the engine metal, black off the good battery, red off the good battery, red off the jumped battery. Never let the clamps touch each other or the car while any of them is still connected.
  7. Step 7: Keep the engine running, then get the battery tested. Drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes, not idling, so the alternator can recharge the battery. A battery that needed a jump, especially in summer, is often near the end of its life: have it tested.
Portable jump pack: red clamp on the battery's positive, black clamp on bare metal, pack switched on, then start the car

With a portable jump pack

  • Pack switched off: red clamp on the battery’s positive (+), black clamp on bare metal on the engine.
  • Switch the pack on, wait a moment, then start the car.
  • Switch the pack off and remove black, then red. Recharge the pack afterwards.
  • No second car needed, which makes it the main alternative to jumper cables.

Safety, especially in UAE heat

  • Heat is what kills UAE batteries. Most last two to three years here. If yours needed a jump in summer, assume it is near the end and get it tested.
  • Do not jump a damaged battery. Cracked, leaking or swollen means replace it, not jump it.
  • No sparks, no smoking near the battery: batteries give off flammable gas, which is why the last clamp goes on engine metal.
  • Mind hot metal. In summer the engine bay, clamps and battery can burn. Wear gloves.
  • Hybrids, EVs and start-stop cars: use only the jump points the manual shows, and check the manual before using one to jump another car.
  • On a highway, do not work beside live traffic. Get behind the barrier and call for help; in an emergency, call 999.
