What is different about a European car
- The battery has to match, and be registered. Most European cars from 2015 onwards have start-stop and need an AGM or EFB battery, and the new battery has to be registered to the car’s computer so the charging matches it. Fit the wrong type, or skip the registration, and the new battery fails early.
- Run-flat and staggered tyres. Many BMW and Mercedes models run on run-flat tyres, and their performance models (BMW M, Mercedes-AMG) often have different tyre sizes front and rear. Run-flats can be driven a limited distance after a puncture, at reduced speed, so you reach a fitter rather than change the wheel at the roadside.
- Warning lights mean fault codes. European cars log faults in their computers, and reading the codes tells you what is wrong before anything is replaced.
- Low and all-wheel-drive cars need a flatbed, with all four wheels off the ground.
