The clearest signs you need an engine oil change are the oil-change light or service reminder coming on, dark gritty oil on the dipstick, a louder or rougher engine, and having driven 8,000–10,000 km (or ~6 months) since the last change. In the UAE's heat and dust, oil degrades faster, so don't wait for symptoms — change on schedule.
Warning signs to watch for
- Dashboard light: An oil-change or service-due light, or worse, the red oil-pressure light (stop driving and check immediately).
- Dark, dirty oil: Fresh oil is amber and translucent; old oil is dark brown/black and gritty on the dipstick.
- Engine noise: Worn-out oil lubricates poorly, so the engine can sound louder, rougher or "tappety."
- Burning-oil smell or smoke: Can mean the oil is breaking down or burning off — get it checked.
- Low oil level: If the dipstick reads low between services, top up and book a change and a leak check.
Why the UAE is harder on oil
High ambient temperatures, fine desert dust, and stop-start city traffic all count as "severe service." Heat thins oil and speeds up its breakdown, while dust contaminates it. That's why many UAE drivers change fully synthetic oil every 8,000–10,000 km or every six months, whichever comes first — and conventional oil sooner.
What happens if you delay too long
Old oil loses its protective film and lets metal parts wear against each other, builds up sludge, and can eventually lead to expensive engine damage. A timely oil change is one of the cheapest ways to protect your engine.
