The clearest signs you need a battery replacement are a slow or laboured engine crank, the battery warning light on your dashboard, dim headlights, and needing a jump-start more than once. In the UAE's heat, batteries often show these symptoms after just 2–3 years.
Warning signs to watch for
- Slow cranking: The engine turns over sluggishly when you start it, especially first thing in the morning.
- Clicking but no start: A rapid clicking sound when you turn the key usually means the battery can't deliver enough current.
- Dashboard battery light: A lit battery symbol points to a charging or battery fault.
- Dim or flickering lights: Headlights and cabin lights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev.
- Electronics acting up: Power windows, infotainment or central locking behaving erratically.
- Swollen or leaking case: A bloated battery case is a heat-damage red flag — replace it promptly.
- Age: Anything over 2–3 years in the UAE is living on borrowed time.
- Repeat jump-starts: If you've needed a jump more than once recently, the battery is failing.
Battery vs. alternator — how to tell
If a jump-start gets you going but the car dies again soon after, the problem is more likely the battery (it isn't holding charge). If the car runs after a jump but the battery light stays on and lights dim while driving, the alternator may not be charging properly. A quick on-site test settles it — and avoids replacing a part that's still good.
What to do next
Don't wait for a no-start in a car park at 45°C. If you've noticed two or more of these signs, have the battery tested. A QARO technician can test the battery and charging system at your location and, if needed, fit a new battery on the spot (from AED 299) — or jump-start you now (from AED 50) so you can drive to safety.
